The Boston edition: the city that invented the field in 1959 still can't out-think its own dating scene

That lab eventually merged into CSAIL, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, still widely ranked among the top three academic AI research organizations in the country, home to more than 125 affiliated faculty working across robotics, foundation models, and AI safety, backed by initiatives like the $1 billion Schwarzman College of Computing and the decade-long, $240 million MIT–IBM Watson AI Lab. Add Harvard's own AI research centers a few miles away, plus a biotech corridor increasingly built on AI-driven drug discovery, and Boston isn't a city that adopted artificial intelligence. It's a city where the field's founding textbook problems were first written down.

Which makes it the most originary version yet of the question this series keeps asking: if the place that invented AI research nearly seven decades ago hasn't out-thought its own dating scene, what does that say about what the technology can actually solve?

Because Boston's dating culture has a genuinely specific character, and it isn't primarily about numbers, though the numbers are real. Census data puts the city at roughly 90 to 93 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women — a modest but consistent skew that's held for years, contributing to Boston's ranking as one of the highest-percentage-single major cities in the country, with over 57% of residents having never married. Nationally, Phocuswright found 56% of U.S. leisure travelers used AI to plan at least one trip this year, and 78% of people who tried it booked something based primarily on its recommendation — a clean, structured, well-bounded problem, not unlike the kind CSAIL's own robotics and planning research solves for warehouses, hospitals, and autonomous systems. Logan sits inside a metro whose signature intellectual export is precisely that kind of formal, rigorous optimization.

Matchmaking has never behaved like that kind of problem, and the industry's own recent history makes the case without needing a Boston-specific example. Justin McLeod, who built Hinge into the country's most dominant dating app, left to launch an AI-first matchmaking startup backed in part by Match Group — and has said plainly that even his new venture treats AI as a coach, not a decision-maker. Three Day Rule, fifteen years into human-run matchmaking before layering in an AI-matching product, drew early criticism for a specific failure: both sides of a match receiving identical AI-generated opening lines, turning the actual humans into spectators in their own conversation. In a city this fluent in spotting a formal system dressed up as intuition, that's a particularly easy failure to notice.

None of this argues AI has no place in Boston dating — coaching tools that sharpen a profile or catch a self-defeating pattern remain a legitimate, evidence-backed use case, distinct from trying to automate the actual judgment call. But Boston might be the single most fitting closing argument in this entire series: the city where formal AI research began in 1959, still relying on human matchmakers precisely because, as Luvo puts it, the goal here "isn't about removing intelligence from the process. It's about creating space for connection alongside it" — something no lab, however foundational, has managed to formalize. That's the case for Luvo's Boston practice, sourcing introductions from real communities across Back Bay, the South End, and Cambridge rather than a database that can out-argue anyone but can't make two overthinkers actually show up for each other. Boston will keep training the researchers who build the next generation of AI. Getting its own residents to stop analyzing long enough to fall for someone is still, even in the birthplace of the field, a human job.
